Empire Triathletes!

Before going off to Franklin & Marshall College in the Fall, Empire swimmer Christopher Shannon completed the grueling 2012 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, which included a 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz island to St. Francis Yacht Club in frigid water, an 18 mile bike ride, and concluded with an 8 mile run. Christopher not only finished, but he placed second in his age group and in the top 5% of 2000 participants, with an overall time of 2:38.07!  (Click here for the full story.) Christopher told  us that his success was  "Thanks to the intensity of Empire's year-round training and the importance of goal-setting if any one of wants to achieve results."   But we know the training is only as good as the work you put into it -- so, congratulations on your hard work and great results Chrisopher! We are proud of you!!

Speaking of hard work... Empire swimmers Avery Kiesel, Isabel Kiesel, Garrett Kiesel, and Olivia Andrews were recently featured in a story on Wall Street Journal Live that focused on their training for the upcoming TOUGHKids Triathlon Championship on September 8th. Click here for a link to the WSJ story.  Triathlons are a "family affair" for these athletes, and we wish them luck in their race!

Eyckmans Racks Up College Awards

Empire Alumnus Robert Eyckmans (Class of 2008) has been busy at Columbia University! The Political Science major is graduating this year after leaving his mark academically as well as on the Columbia Lions Swim Team. Honors he has garnered include:

  • Columbia Varsity/School Record

    • 100 Breast (55.08)

    • 400 IM (3:51.11)

  • Academic All-Ivy

    • Selected by the Ivy league, NOT by the school.  Criteria is to maintain a 3.0 GPA and have a strong impact in one's sport.  Rob was the only swimmer to qualify, and 1 of 10 Columbia athletes for that season (winter sports).

  • Division 1 Mid-Major All-America Honorable Mention

    • The criteria is to attend a Division 1 Mid Major School and make an NCAA "B" cut; had "B' cuts in all his events.  400 IM, 100 breast, and 200 Breast (1:59.26)

  • Second Team All-Ivy

    • Placed second in an event at the Ivy league Championships (400 IM).

  • MVP

    • Voted most valuable by his teammates.

  • Herbert Vollmer Award- Most Outstanding Swimmer or Diver

    • Awarded to the most outstanding swimmer by the athletics Department. ( More or less an MVP award, except the athlete is selected by the university, not voted on by the swimmers.)

When talking about his Empire experience and its impact on his collegiate swimming, Rob said "Empire is a special place that not only produces good swimmers, but good men as well.  There is no swimmer I have encountered in my four years of college that displayed the discipline, respect, or work ethic on the same level of that of the Empire program."

Thanks for the kind words Rob, and for proving them true.  Congratulations on a great college career -- you have done us proud!!!

Erin Calderoni Named Greenwich Swimmer-of-Year

Congratulations to Empire Alumna, Erin Calderoni, who has been named the female recipient of the 2012 Walter Rothenheber Memorial Swim Performer-of-the-Year Award by the Greenwich Aquatic Hall of Fame.  This award recognizes superior competitive achievement during the previous calendar short and long course seasons, and will be presented to Erin at the Annual Greenwich Aquatic Hall of Fame Awards Luncheon on November 26th.   After an impressive swimming career at Empire and at Greenwich High School, Erin moved on to Loyola University where she will compete with the Greyhounds when they open their season on October 8th against George Mason.  Along with studying and swimming, Erin found the time (and energy!) to run the 9th Annual Diane Geppi-Aikens 5K with her new Loyola teammates.  Congratulations to Erin on this wonderful recognition of her hard work and accomplishments!
